When I think of summer, I picture myself on a gorgeous beach, toes in the sand, hearing waves crashing against the shore.. or lounging with my shades on alongside one of those beautiful infinity pools. I haven’t done that since becoming a mother. Now that I have a little one in tow, I will be sharing these beach and poolside moments with her. Which got me to thinking: “Am I prepared to bring Aven to the beach or bring her to the pool?” The answer was most certainly “NO”. I’m not the best swimmer, and I would like for her to have the opportunity to become comfortable in water without feeding off of my uneasiness. So, I thought about enrolling her in swimming lessons. When I came across the opportunity to try out Aqua-Tots Swim Schools, I was thrilled.
They are conveniently located in my city and have some of the best programs I’ve seen. To check out their newest Atlanta facility, click here! Aqua-Tots has been around since 1991 and is an industry leader in swimming instruction. Their main focus is on safety and they really do a great job of giving parents and children tools to promote a safe and fun experience in water.
Experience as a Beginner to Swim Lessons
Our first day at swim class was also Aven’s first time in a large body of water. We were both a bit nervous, but were quickly put at ease by our instructors. They sang personalized rhyming songs which immediately got Aven’s attention. They were also confident and took the time to explain each activity we participated in for the duration of our swim lesson.
Progress
After about three swimming lessons, Aven was noticeably more at ease in the water. She was excited to participate in more of the activities like: reaching for a toy fish (which gets her used to stretching her body out across the water), reaching through the water for a large colored ring (which challenges her depth perception), grabbing the wall of the pool and knocking down a turtle (which helps her recognize boundaries and that grabbing the side or wall of the pool is a place she can go to find air). She was also excited about the songs we sing in the pool and even sings them at home!
Swim instructors provide parents with an Aqua-Card,( a weekly report card) that features individualized notes about each child’s progress in swim class.
Highlights
- I love that Aqua-Tots swim classes are just 30 minutes. The swimming lessons go by quickly while you’re having fun in the water, but flow nicely from beginning to end. We elected to participate two days a week, and I really think that this has helped Aven become comfortable faster.
- The water is warm, 90º to be exact.
- Aqua-Tots is indoors and is open year-round!
- The facility is clean, bright and inviting.
- The instructors are friendly, enthusiastic, and highly trained
Learning to swim is such an important skill and can literally be a life saver. According to information provided by the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1-14. Enrolling my daughter in swim lessons was a major priority for me and the experience at Aqua-Tots has been amazing. I believe Aven’s participation in Aqua-Tots swim classes has increased her trust in me as well as in herself, and is definitely helping build a strong foundation for self-confidence.
